Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS)

Feedback from students completing OnlineInset courses is automatically collected using a format known as Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS). This is an approach originally developed in the health service to assess the extent to which goals are achieved for clients undergoing various forms of treatment relating to their mental health.

ScaleGAS has been applied to the work of educational psychologists and others working with children and young people with special and additional educational needs in the UK, and provides valuable feedback concerning the effectiveness of interventions designed to improve learning and/or behaviour. The 2009 DCSF Quality Standards for SEN Support and Outreach Services encourage the gathering of this type of evaluative feedback, and GAS feedback from OnlineInset fulfils this requirement.

Participants completing OnlineInset courses are asked to assess the extent to which each of their three goals have been achieved using the GAS scoring framework shown below. This feedback is collected 90 days after completion of the course to allow sufficient time for the goals to be achieved.

Achieved at a much higher level than expected (score 2)
Achieved at a higher level than expected (score 1)
Achieved at the level described in the SMART goal (score 0)
Achieved at a lower level than expected (i.e. partly) (score -1)
Not achieved at all (score -2)

At first sight it may seem strange that if a goal is achieved then a score of zero is recorded. However, what this indicates is that expectations have been met. A score above zero means that they have been exceeded, and a score below zero means that they have not been met. Familiarity with this scoring system is obviously necessary to interpret the results correctly.
