Having a clearer understanding of what kind of support will benefit the pupils and staff has already impacted on practice in my work setting. I have created a visual timetable for the learning room and pupils are involved in putting it together each morning the outcome of which has helped the pupils prepare for the day ahead thus reducing any anxiety or stress that accompanies any changes to routine.

I have also started to use pupils' names when giving out instructions which has shown an impact already as there has been little confusion as to what was expected and by whom.

It has helped me to deliver training and analyse good practice with our Foundation Stage staff at school.  We have shared thoughts and ideas, have bought some new resources and are bginning to use these effectively to set targets for individuals knowledgeably.  We are working cohesively and the staff involved are developing their skills, ready to share with others in Key Stage 1.

The training has also helped me reflect on how I can support my own sons, both of whom are on the autistic spectrum and with very different communication needs.  Though the training was specific to early years, the principles and good practice apply wherever there is a need.

Good practice will be shared with all colleagues, e.g. ensuring you have child's attention (specifically using child's name first), getting down to their level and using simple language.  One of the key things I will share is the 'communication chain'.  Ensuring staff understand the processes that a child has to go through to understand and respond to what is said to them.

As a team we aim to look carefully at the environment with a view to reducing 'information overload'.

- SLCN course, No role selected, Coventry City Council (14 March 2013)

"

As Head Teacher of a mainstream school with a Centre for children with communication and interaction difficulties, I can already see the positive impact  that the course has had.  The mainstream teachers, teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors and playgroup leaders now have a much better understanding of the difficulties and needs of the children with ASD, and realise that each child's needs may differ considerably from those of another. The course has also stimulated a great deal of conversation and discussion between the specialist team in the Centre (teacher and TAs) and the mainstream staff. Mainstream staff have been able to use some of the resources and ideas from the course in order to benefit other children in their classes and think that they now generally have a wider range of strategies for providing for their learning needs.

"

- ASD course, Head Teacher, Gloucestershire (13 March 2013)

The course has taught me how to support a child with visual stuctures, how a child does not like the change in their daily routine. I will try to overcome any problems beforehand so the child does not feel anxiety. I adapted myself to the childs need. I communicate with the child using simple words. Compare to last year, I am more confident in supporting a child with autism.

Certainly more aware of pupil's needs and my potential misunderstandings - the need for me to plan SMART has been a real help to my own teaching.

Most ASD pupil's that I teach have responded relly positively to this "new" approach and are enjoying lessons more and seem far more engaged.

"

"

- ASD course, Learning Support Assistant (LSA), Surrey County Council (25 February 2013)

The training has impacted  on my  understanding of an ASD pupil. It has help me in recognising the different aspects of the spectrum and where on it the pupils that I work with on a day to day basis are. How they learn and how to help them organise themselves. How best to help them to access the schools curriculum and function on a day to day basis. It has also help me to see the world from their point of view.

"

- ASD course, Teaching Assistant, Coventry City Council (25 February 2013)

"

- ASD course, Teacher, Gloucestershire (24 February 2013)

"

As Head teacher, I can already see the positive impact that this course has had on the day to day practice of the staff within my school. Formal and informal discussions with staff show that they have a much better understanding of the individual needs and difficulties of children with ASD. The course has also enabled staff to be much more reflective in their practice with all the children in their class and has given them a wider range of strategies to use so that they can be more proactive in meeting the needs of all the children.

"

- ASD course, Head Teacher, Gloucestershire (21 February 2013)

"

The training has helped me to understand the difficulties that Dyslexic students have and understand why.

Helping me to begin to look at the Library environment in a different way and slowly make changes to help all students find the environment more welcoming.

It also helps me to look at a wider school situation - invited to sit on a working group about ' bridging the gap' I hope to take this knowledge with me to these groups to try and support our most vulnerable students and ultimately try to support change that may benefit them.

"

- Dyslexia course, Teacher, Coventry City Council (18 February 2013)

"

Having completed the course I am now going to pass on some of my knowledge to the other teachers in my school to help them understand ASD, what signs to look for and strategies to help.  This should have a a real impact in  y school and make sure we are all using agreed strategies with the identified children.

"

The training has helped me notice other children with mild speech, language communication difficulites and I now ensure I have their full attention before I ask them questions. Also that they remain on task with small targets set that are discussed with the child and the teacher.

"

- SLCN course, Teaching Assistant, Luton (14 February 2013)

"

The video of Uta Frith talking about Central Coherence Deficit prompted me to re-look at my planning to ensure that I had provided adequate opportunities for students to generalise their learning to different settings. I added another layer to my planning to support students in generalising skills from the classroom to the playground.

The video also prompted me to check that the links between the skills that I am teaching are explicit to the students. In my setting, this can best be achieved by breaking a task down into very small steps. This allows the students to see the links and also allows the activity to gradually "shift" to the next stage. Breaking a task down into very small steps can make it harder for students to remain focused on one element for too long and perhaps make their own links. I added another "shifting" activity to my planning where I could see that it was possible for students to make logical but incorrect links between the skills.

"

- ASD course, Teacher, Surrey County Council (07 February 2013)

"

Working with ASD children this course was excellent. It updated my knowledge and i learnt new termology of the triad of impairment. Before this course i had not known about 'theory of mind'. The course has helped me to begin to identify more students who may have autism that I may have ignored in the past.  There are two studentts on the ASC in my year class.  Although they both suffer the condition, they are on differentt spectrum.  One has more social difficulties more than the other and has reading difficulties, while the other is equally withdrawn and prefers to work more independently but less aggressive tthan the former.

"

- ASD course, Teacher, Luton (28 January 2013)

"

The training has impacted on my practice within the school environment. I look at different ways of improving students behaviour. Today was not one of the best days, especially when I had looked out for the positives in three of the students who were causing a major problem within the lesson and the positives were limited it had been mostly negative. Therefore, I used the short scripts for a while and had continued the lesson. But all is not lost, I shall try again tomorrow.

I feel that this programme can provide an invaluable training aid for helping staff to better manage and better understand aspects of behaviour.

"

- BESD course, Head of Support Service, Wolverhampton City Council (24 January 2013)

"

I found the course so accessible and relevant to the work which my department does that I have now recoemmended that all our Teaching Assistants should do the course and this has been agreed by the Senior Leadership Team. They have allocated three twilight sessions to introduce the course and help Teaching Assistants to cover the first two sections.

The section on Assessment for Learning will be especially useful to support staff who have to make observations of new students during the induction process.

"

I HAVE LEARNT A LOT ABOUT BEHAVIOUR OF KIDS AND HOW ADULTS ACTIONS AND WORDS HAVE A IMPACT ON KIDS BEHAVIOUR. SO WHEN I'M AT SCHOOL AND WHEN I'M WITH MY KIDS AT HOME I'M VERY CAREFUL IN HOW I TALK TO THEM AND TRY MY BEST TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THINGS AND WHY THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY AT SOME TIMES.

"

- BESD course, HLTA, English School Foundation (05 January 2013)

"

I have set up a group within Key Stage 1 with children who have been struggling with their reading and writing. After watching the activities suggested in this course I have asked my TA to run a group daily for particular children using the strategies suggested...ie the rainbow ark with all letters set out in order, then retrieving letters to make up words. This seems to be working really well and the group is moving onto making sentences using their words - as well as reviewing old words constantly. I think the visual aspect of this activity is working particularly well alongside the repetition.

This training has helped me understand dyspraxia, how it must feel for children who are affected by it and I have been able to develop  the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to help children in my classroom

I am now in a position to understand how clear precise intructions and sequencing a plan of action can help dyspraxic children in so many activities many of us take for granted

Most importantly though, I can help other children empathise with the child (they see as different )and have them realize how frustrating and distressing it can be.

So many iterventions I've learnt will be part of my routine now and I hope to be able to make a difference

I will pass on information to all the staff and encourage them to complete this course for themselves.

I will include guidance for helping children with ASD in our school policy.

- SLCN course, Teaching Assistant, English School Foundation (14 December 2012)

"

This online course has definitely had a great impact on me professionally and personally.  It has given me a different perspective on how to deal with children with the aspergers syndrome.

All the information was very detailed and I have been able to pass on information to my colleagues at school.  We have had meetings and a couple of things have changed and been put in practice such as goals and interventions and attitudes towards the child.

I personally feel that this course gave me deep understanding and every time I work with my child I can use some knowledge toawards him.

And the best part the outcome is amazing, I certainly feel there is a change in my attitude and the child.  We have formed a great relationship and have recommended this course to all people who are connected with children with ASD.

This training has impacted me in an extremely positive way. I am now a lot more aware of dyslexia and how to scaffold for it within a classroom setting. I have also been able to pick up on students who may have dyslexic tendencies and talk to my SEN manager about them. I also believe that this course has affected my behaviour managment when running my booster groups as i now know how to deal with children who have dyslexia. I am extremely happy that i have done the course as i believe i have a much better understanding of it.

This training has made my support of autistic children far more effective and sensitive. I can understand the reasons for the behaviour that needs to be managed in order to progess learning for these children. I can help explain to others why the student is behaving in a certain way. I can help make the student feel more secure and learn more and enjoy school more.

"

Although I have taught a few ASD students before I had no previous training on how to develop an inclusive learning environment, teaching strategy or use appropriate resources and assessment methods.  This course has provided me with a solid basis of understanding ASD students and their needs and supported my development of a more effective and inclusive approach to my professional practice.

Resources and assessments now include more succint use of language, instructions and questions and I am able to make adjustments to varying needs more quickly and effectively than before.  A number of ASD learners have now successfully passed their maths unit this term as a result.

"

Since completing this course I have spent considerable time looking at different strategies and intervention that I can use in helping my students. The course gave me some very useful ideas such as some new computer games software which I am currently looking into.

In addition I have gained a better understanding of how dyslexic students’ process letters sounds and words. the Case Study videos gave me a great insight from the children themselves into what tools I can implement that would interest them and help them to learn. I strongly believe that this will influence my teaching practice in the future.

- Dyslexia course, Advisory Teacher, Manchester (08 December 2012)

"

Before I took this course my teacher selected three students whom I was to work with on completion of this course. I straight away worked with four students, as I identified another student with similar issues to resolve, i.e. fine motor difficulties when applying the interventions.

After four weeks of working with them, they achieved their first goal and I am now working on their second goal.

Also, implementing good sitting posture for students during writing tasks is very effective and make them concentrate more on the tasks they are doing.

Simple techniques like these have given me the opportunity to help and work with students in my class that have MCD.

I have found this training to be most useful at both school and in the home. I have been carrying out my goals for a couple of weeks now and, slowly, starting to see results - Yay!!

Setting out expectations as early as possible is a great way to motivate, especially when there are incentives ie stickers, small rewards on offer!

Putting the preferred option last in a list of choices works wonders too, works every time!

As the class teacher is also on this training it has allowed us to have a collective understanding of the child within our class. There are strategies that I have learned that I am able to share with the parents to further what we are doing within the school.

I am able to pass on what I have leanred to other members of staff so they too will have an understanding of Autism.

"

- ASD course, Teaching Assistant, Royal Borough of Greenwich (12 November 2012)

As with all training I have learnt new information - so gained knowledge. I have remembered passed learning - so reignited passed memories. I feel a can have more empathy with the child I work with as I have more of an understanding of how difficult things can be for him.  I have learned of different stratergies to use to help with his behaviour and learning.  I have a better understanding of how important it is for all adults working in a school to have this kind of training.  Since joining the couse I have also been more aware of the signs of autism and may have even had a hand in getting a child a diagnosis who might have otherwise slipped through the net as his symptoms were not so obvious as some others.

"

- ASD course, Learning Support Assistant (LSA), Royal Borough of Greenwich (10 November 2012)

"

I am actively bringing strategies learned on the course to my initial speech and language therapy assessment sessions.  Although I don't think the course has changed whether or not I would refer a child for a paediatric developmental assessment I do feel better able to support parents with practical strategies whilst they are waiting for diagnosis and ASC pathway interventions.  I therefore feel both practice and outcomes (parental satisfaction with service) may benefit.

"

- ASD course, Speech Therapist, Swindon (09 November 2012)

It has made me realise how many children have a degree of SLCN and it has made me aware of how to tackle some of the issues we come across in school.

I will definitely be using some of the strategies which this course has taught me, a lot of it is of course common sense, but even little things like providing a child with a writing frame can be very useful and take some stress out of a situation.
