How the eye works

Light bounces off the objects around us enabling us to see them. Different objects reflect different amounts of light.

In order for you to see correctly, three things need to work properly –

The eye, the optic nerve and the brain.

Although a child’s eyes may appear to be fine, damage to the brain or optic nerve may cause sight loss. Click on any part of the eye below to reveal more information.

Seeing can be likened to the process of taking pictures on a film with a camera which you then get developed. The retina is like a camera film - it's sensitive to light. The image is focused onto the retina by the cornea, lens and vitreous humour and is then passed to the brain, by the optic nerve, where it is "developed" or processed. Therefore we actually “see” with our brain. This whole process normally happens very quickly.
