The iceberg metaphor
The triad of impairments generate a range of behaviours which superficially may appear to have a different causation. To fully understand the underlying causes the iceberg metaphor is often used. The visible part of the iceberg represents the range of behaviours which are apparent to adults and the learner’s peer group, whilst the hidden part represents the underlying causes.
