The course you are about to follow sets out to increase your knowledge, understanding and skills in working with learners who have been identified as falling on the autistic spectrum and are characterised as having autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).

Summary

The course is divided into four sections each addressing a different aspect of autistic spectrum disorders, and they follow a logical sequence. You will come across a variety of interactive activities, and from time to time will be invited to contribute to an online discussion. There is a quiz at the end of each of the first three sections, and you must complete these as well as contributing to discussion to qualify for a Certificate of Online Completion.

Understanding ASD

This section aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the incidence of autistic spectrum disorders
  • Provide factual information about autistic spectrum disorders
  • Distinguish between autistic spectrum disorders and other communication difficulties
  • Define the distinguishing characteristics of autistic spectrum disorders
  • Raise awareness of the behaviours which arise from these characteristics and their causes
Assessment for Learning

This section aims to:

  • Describe the assessment of individual needs arising from autistic spectrum disorders
  • Provide a basis for the analysis of particular behaviours and their implications for learning
  • Provide a basis for the assessment of the environment and its implications for learning
Interventions

This section aims to:

  • Introduce a range of strategies for meeting the needs of learners with autistic spectrum disorders
  • Emphasise the most widely used and successful strategies
  • Identify general principles which can be applied
  • Provide an overview of a number of specific intervention packages
Case Studies

This section provides several individual case studies to illustrate:

  • The needs of the individual in the case study
  • The interventions which have been implemented
  • The response of the young person to these interventions and their resulting progress
