How well are you and/or your school doing?

Some questions to think about:

Is partnership with parents integral in your school? Is it?
  • included in the school development plan?
  • an agenda item at staff meetings?
  • a key element in staff appointment/appraisal?
  • a part of the induction of new staff?
Does your school make all parents and families feel welcome and valued? Do you?
  • work to build open and honest relationships?
  • encourage parents to have an active role in the life and work of the school?
  • try to be sensitive to the varying backgrounds, needs and circumstances of all families?

How do you support parents who have special needs themselves?

Do you know what parents think of your school?
  • How do you know? Do you ask them?
  • What is important to parents? To staff?
  • If this is different how do you deal with this?
How do you give parents information about the curriculum, their child’s progress, homework requirements etc?
  • Do you involve parents other than when there is a crisis?
  • If so, how?
  • Do you signpost your local Parent Partnership Service?
Is your partnership with parents based on an understanding of their situation and their lifestyles, or to fit in with what suits the school?
  • Timing of parents’ evenings / open events
  • Opportunities to speak less formally with staff / look at children’s work
  • Information-sharing sessions e. g. explaining the curriculum, “how to listen to your child read”, SEN awareness
  • Health related issues such as head lice, immunisation, dental monitoring
